FAQ

Q: I am
a student in Switzerland and I'm interested in getting a Masters Degree
in North America after my graduation. What should I do?
A: Collect as much information as you can - inform yourself. This
site is a good start for this. If you are more serious, talk to somebody
who did that.
Q: I have
information you might want to add to this site. Who can I contact?
A: Go to the About site, you'll find contact
information there.
Q: What is the difference between a Master's of Science and a MBA?
A: The Master of Science degree (M.S.) is an engineering degree
with focus on research (best comparable to an ETH degree in Switzerland).
An MBA degree is a business degree, mainly for managers (best comparable
to an HSG degree in Switzerland).
Q: The degree of ETH Engineers is typically translated as a Master's
Degree. What is the difference between a ETH degree and a Master's Degree
from Northamerica?
A: In Northamerica the education is split in undergraduate school
(basically bachelor degree) and graduate school (Master's and PhD degrees).
In order to enter graduate school, students are strictly selected (it's
basically like applying for a job and for some universities there are
up to 40 students for one position). The focus of most M.S. programs is
research, as it is for an ETH degree, and this is the big difference to
the Fachhochschule. For work in the industry a M.Sc. degree obtained abroad
is definitively more valueable than an ETH degree.
Q: Will
I get a higher salary with a Master's Degree?
A: Of course a higher
salary cannot be promised, but your value on the human resource market
will increase dramatically when you obtain an M.Sc. degree in addition
to your FH degree. By doing this you prove basically the following important
skills:
- Persistence (Hartnäckigkeit)
- Will to go "the extra mile" and not go along the simplest and obvious
way.
- Lived abroad: Knows and understands difficulties involved
- Experience in a multicultural environment
- English language competence.
- Research and technical experience.
